Size up

One of the things I'm grateful for as a plus-sized woman is my sewing machine.

Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying I make all of my clothes (I do make some, sometimes it's easier to get the right fit that way) but I do tend to alter almost everything I purchase in one way or another.

Sometimes I add a bit to a hemline (I have long legs and some skirts look indecently short on me) sometimes I take in a waist-line (because my hip to waist ratio is a fair span) but the most common alteration I do on my own clothes? Taking in the arm-holes. I'm telling you, as a plus-sized and busty gal, sometimes in order to get things to fit properly in the bust without being crazy stretched out requires a fair amount of adjustment under the arms.

I tried this super-cute dress on from Old Navy in my correct size (an XL) and it fit.... okay. In fact, I think it might have fit the way it was intended to fit, but I wasn't crazy about it. It was clingy across the belly because of my hips and stretched out across the bust. So even though it fit perfectly in the waist it just wasn't right. I picked up the XXL took it home and took it in under the arms.

Now it skims past my waist (with lots of breathing room) hits me at the hips nicely and doesn't bag out under the arms sharing my bra choice with the rest of the world. If it's a possibility for you - sometimes sizing up and making a few alterations can make a world of difference in your clothes.

And if you don't sew? Don't fret! Most dry-cleaners will have a tailor on hand who can make minor adjustments on your clothes and their fees are usually quite reasonable. Or ask your friends - you may know someone who sews who would like to make a few extra $$ on the side! You never know!

  1. What a lovely dress. I wish I was talented or had patience enough for the sewing department.

    1. Thanks Rachel! I would never have had clothes that fit at all if I didn't learn to sew! I've always been a "hard to fit"

    1. Lol May! It's really not nearly as difficult as everyone thinks - but like I said - if you don't sew then it's likely worth it to find a tailor or seamstress that can do small alterations for you! Good fit is paramount to looking well-dressed! Thanks for stopping by.

Perhaps I need to check out Old Navy! Super cute dress on you, I really like the blue, especially with the jacket.

    1. Hi Jess! It had been AGES since I actually shopped IN Old Navy (often picked things up while thrifting but...) and I was pleasantly surprised at the dresses that I found! Even if they only last a season or two they're not so expensive that you feel like you're getting your money's worth. It's all about the end cost-per-wear!
